  1. STUDENT SAFETY COUNCIL

    WHAT:

The Student Safety Council is a university organization that educates the students and employees of local safety hazards and dangers. It ensures that all possible precautions are taken for the well-being of the students and assists Brigham Young University-Idaho in its mission to safely maintain a wholesome academic, cultural, social, and spiritual environment. Some of its goals are to creatively and productively implement safety strategies to break bad safety habits, work with university events, actively be engaged in monitoring and responding to concerns by the Presidents Council, employees, parents, students, and the community. Constantly recruiting volunteers and prospective members and being examples of safety as the members pursue their own endeavors are other goals that they have. Whether it’s riding a bike, driving, walking, or swimming, this program wants to make sure that the students are safe in their recreational activities.
The organization consists of a very small number of students who are concerned for the well-being of other students on campus. It comes up with many different catch-phrases and advertisements to inform the students on how to be careful and also watch out for other people as well.

    WHO:

The members of the Student Safety Council have really put their hearts into this program. It has helped all of them immensely whether it be getting experience or growing to love the students, learning time management and leadership skills, and seeking out the challenge of trying to do all one can to protect the students and the community. This program not only directly benefits the students on campus, but by the knowledge that they have to take precautionary measures with many different activities, members of the community can also be protected. Rexburg is full of students. Students who drive, walk, run, and ride bikes. It can be dangerous to children out on the street and senior folk out walking. If all are cautious and on the lookout for danger, then all will be protected.

The students on the BYU-Idaho campus benefit directly from this program. If they take what the Student Safety Council is saying to try and protect them, then they can pass on what they know, and also protect others. Many other people are also influenced by the students that know of the possible dangers of certain recreational activities. The relevant public does not know much about this program and what it’s for. Advertisement for this program is very necessary to ensure the safety of the students.

    STRENGTHS:
    • Students involved feel strongly about the welfare of other students
    • Creatively assesses certain ways to get the students interested

    WEAKNESSES:
    • Not well-known
    • Not very many members

  3. STRENGTHS
What does the program do well?
-The program does a great job informing students of local hazards and dangers.
How do its strengths correspond to its stated objectives?
-One of the Students Safety Councils strengths is to inform and carry out. Within the objectives, the underlying statement through all of them is this; to successfully carry out campaigns and inform not only students, but those within the community about safety.
    How is program effectiveness assessed?
    -(I don’t know..ideas?)

    How is program effectiveness assessed?
-Every other week meet as directors with your advisor (Bro Gunderson) to follow up on what is being accomplished.
    Opening socials and closing socials.

    WEAKNESSES
Consistency each week with attendance. By the end of the semester, less students come because they get busy with other activities, and Student Safety Council might not be a priority for them.
Needs better recruitment, better knowledge to Communication students to take as a practicum.
Not enough people know how to use the programs (adobe) to be able to distribute flyers.
A member of committee dying, two programs he was in charge of this semester dissolved (survive the drive, hike safety)
Students death put a damper on the rest of the program for this semester.

  7. PROBLEM/NEED FLOW CHART

What is the problem or need?
Students aren’t aware of the program, and they’re not aware of safety precautions they need to take while attending BYU-Idaho, and developing those habits that will help them as they graduate from the University.

Who experiences the problem/need and on what level?
Students are experiencing the problem and those within the community who are affected by lack of awareness on how we can be safe within the community.

What needs to be done? How will it get done? Who will do it?
There needs to be more publicity and advertising of the program. A better website needs to be created, one where it is easily accessible. The advisors and directors within the program can accomplish this.

If the problem persists, which community values are compromised? If effective changes are made, which community values are realized?
Safety within the community is compromised. If students aren’t aware, than the rest of the community is effected because BYU Idaho students are to set the example of safety and well being.
Values that are realized within the community if changes are made effectively are a safer community, one where people are more aware of their surroundings, as well as helping others in times of need or danger.

How does the selected program address the problem? What are the program’s core values?
Student Safety Council realizes the need to let other people know about the program. (I really don’t know what to put here!! Brittany? What do you think?!)
